We are delighted to be able to offer National Professional Qualifications through two different providers this year, as part of our commitment to delivering the best possible professional development to all colleagues.

Why take an NPQ?

National Professional Qualifications (NPQs) are a nationally recognised suite of qualifications for teachers and school leaders at all levels; from those who want to develop expertise in high quality teaching practice, to those leading multiple schools across a trust or other group of schools.

NPQ courses are designed to help you hone and expand the abilities you already have, helping you become a more effective leader inside and outside the classroom. Completing an NPQ will support you on the next step in your career by offering practical support and guidance, and the core knowledge you need to help your school improve further. Wherever your teaching career takes you, having an NPQ can help you demonstrate your continued commitment to and expertise in school leadership and specialist areas of teaching practice.

The updated suite of NPQs launched in November 2021. The courses have been revised to reduce the workload burden on teachers, while still providing the opportunity to develop and apply their learning.

As part of our role as an Associate College for the National Institute of Teaching, we are offering three qualifications; NPQLL, NPQEYL and NPQPM. The NPQs are built on leading research and grounded in best practice: what we have learnt works well in schools.

Programmes are developed by people who know what teachers need: designed with school life in mind, they are respectful of your precious time. We also work to develop our own research to ensure our programmes will have maximum impact.

NPQ in Leading Primary Maths

The National Professional Qualification for Leading Primary Maths will equip you with the knowledge, skills, experience and network to know how to lead Maths in a primary phase or whole-school. This course builds on the knowledge you already have as an experienced teacher or middle leader, in addition to your prior learning about Maths mastery, and focusses on what you need to know and be able to do to effectively lead the Maths practice of others.

NPQ in Leading Literacy

The National Professional Qualifucation in Leading Literacy is designed for ambitious classroom teachers and middle leaders, who want to – or already – have responsibility for leading literacy across a school, year group, key stage or phase. Developed by teachers for teachers, the programme will harness the NIoT’s leading research and putting it to immediate, practical use.

NPQ in Early Years Leadership

The National Professional Qualification in Early Years Leadership is designed for ambitious early-years leaders who want to be – or already are – nursery managers, nursery headteachers or childminders with leadership responsibilities. Developed by some of the most successful school leaders in the country, the programme will harness the NIoT’s leading research, putting it to practical use.

We are also working collaboratively as a delivery partner as The Leicester Diocesan Trusts Collective for The Church of England (in partnership with the Catholic Education Service) and offer a further suite of NPQs to teachers and school leaders nationwide.

NPQ for Headship

For school leaders who are, or are aspiring to be, a headteacher or head of school with responsibility for leading a school. The Church of England National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) provides a unique opportunity to grow as a leader.

NPQ for Senior Leadership

For school leaders who are, or are aspiring to be, a senior leader with cross-school responsibilities, equipping you to respond effectively to the school-wide challenges you will encounter; empowering you to lead your specific whole school responsibilities, enabling the flourishing of children and adults through an ambitious vision for your school.

NPQ for Leading Teacher Development

For teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading the development of other teachers in their school. The programme will develop evidence-led expertise equipping you to respond effectively to the challenges and opportunities of developing teacher expertise and classroom practice across your school context.

NPQ for Leading Behaviour and Culture

For teachers and all school staff who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading behaviour and/or supporting pupil wellbeing in their school, equipping you to respond effectively to the challenges and opportunities of ensuring great behaviour and pupil wellbeing, enabling the flourishing of children and adults through an ambitious vision for your area of the school.

The Application Process

Step 1 - Register with the DFE

To confirm your eligibility to complete an NPQ, you should first complete the Department for Education online registration process. Please ensure you have you TRN number in order to complete your registration (TRN guidance below).

Step 2 - Complete your Application Form

Once you have been validated by the DfE, you will automatically receive our application form in your inbox. Sometimes this does appear in the spam folder, so please keep an eye out in there.

You can begin to complete the form as soon as you receive this. It is very important that your personal details are all entered accurately as these will be used to maintain contact with you.

Please ensure that you use the same email throughout the process
If your name changes through the process, please contact the TRA to notify them of this. It is only once the TRA have confirmed this change, that we can then change it on our system. Please continue to use your old name until we have confirmed this change.

As well as your personal details, the form will ask you 3 open questions; why you have chosen to apply, your experience and why us? Please take the time to carefully consider each answer. This ensures that our cohort has dedicated, driven individuals with a common goal of developing as great leaders in education.

Step 3 - Sponsor Endorsement

Finally, on this form, you will also be asked to input your sponsor’s details. This is typically your headteacher (or Governor if you are a headteacher). Please let them know in advance that you have used their details because once you have submitted your form, they will receive the sponsor form to complete.

Once you submit your form, your part of the process is complete. Your application will be looked at, and you will then hear from us regarding the status of your application.
